What drives the cost of a custom wood mantel?
A mantel looks like a single piece of wood, so the range of quotes people receive tends to surprise them. Almost all of the difference comes from four decisions: what the slab is, how thick it reads, how it attaches to the wall, and what the wall is made of.
A mantel quote is driven by the slab itself and by how it meets the wall. Species and thickness set the material cost; the mounting method and the surround set the labour. A straightforward corbel mount into a framed wall sits at one end, a concealed steel mount into stone at the other.

What drives cost
- Materials
Species is the single biggest lever. Walnut and mesquite are premium hardwoods and are priced accordingly. White oak and knotty alder are more moderate. Reclaimed timber varies with what the mill actually has, so its cost moves month to month rather than sitting at a fixed level.
- Size and dimensions
Length matters less than thickness. A thicker mantel reads heavier in the room and requires a heavier slab, which is where the material cost concentrates. Longer spans also narrow the pool of boards wide and clear enough to use.
- Design complexity
A rectangular mantel with eased edges is the baseline. Chamfers, hand-hewn texture, a live edge, or a returned end that wraps a corner each add shop time and require more raw stock to allow for the shaping.
- Site conditions
What the mantel mounts into changes the labour more than most people expect. Framed drywall is straightforward. Stone veneer, brick, and stucco require different anchors and careful scribing so the underside sits tight against an irregular surface.
- Hardware
A corbel mount uses visible brackets and is the simpler install. A concealed mount hides steel inside the mantel and anchors into structure, giving a floating look at the cost of more fabrication and more precise layout.
- Finishing
Finishing can be included as part of the approved project scope when we're installing the millwork. You can also take the mantel untreated and finish it yourself. Either way, the finish is priced as part of the scope rather than assumed.
- Installation
A working firebox brings clearance requirements that a decorative surround does not. Access, ceiling height, and whether the room is finished all affect how long install day takes.
- Supplier and commodity changes
Hardwood is a commodity. Slab availability and lumber pricing move with the market, so a quote reflects conditions at the time it is written. Any material-price conditions are stated in the quote itself.
